Effective Leaders – Do They All Share A Generic Set of Qualities

Sunday, August 2nd, 2009

This weekend I found myself re-reading Morgan W. McCall Jr.’s book High Flyers: Developing the Next Generation of Leaders.

In the preface he states that “…there is apparantly a widespread and fundamental need to believe that a single (and usually short) list of generic qualities can be used to describe all effective leaders and that these qualities are relatively stable over the course of a person’s career. “  McCall states that this is inconsistent with what he has learned about how executives develop.

What do you think?  Is there a generic list?  If so what are some of the qualities you think are on that list?

Navigating in a Multi-Generational Workplace

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Pelorus Leadership Group, Inc. and Navigen Leadership, LLC are working together to create the series: Navigating in a Multi-Generational Workplace.  The twelve three hour programs in this series will cover such topics as an overview of generational influences and workplace behavior, ways to reconcile generational clash points, how to communicate so each generation gets the message, how to co-mentor so all learn from each other and how to lead effectively in a multi- generational workplace.

Courses will also address each generation’s unique expectations, desires and challenges as they relate to onboarding, motivation and engagement, securing peak performance, career advancement and retention.

There will also be courses specifically for Millennials to help them understand why others have misconceptions about them and how they can be successful in a multi-generational workplace where others may not fully understand or accept their views on work.

How Are Skill Shortages Changing the Way Work is Done and Who We Hire?

Saturday, June 27th, 2009

During a recent presentation to a group of HR professional I shared Harriet Hankin’s statement from her book The New Workforce.    She wrote: “There will be a shortage of 40,000 principals by 2005.  Schools are hiring MBAs rather than MAs in Education.”

My question to the group and my question to you is how might a principal with an MBA differ from a principal with an MA in Education?  How might this different perspective change how the work of education gets done?

Several members of the audience shared that they too are looking at nontraditional applicants for a variety of jobs.  The way work gets done is changing as a result of this.  On the other hand the changes in the way work gets done also allow us to look at nontraditional applicants as the skill sets we require are shifting. A classic chicken or the egg.

Organizations are working hard to find people who have transferable experiences if not the experiences they traditionally seek.

Is your workplace being effected by nontraditional hires?  How and why?

Welcome to Ready.Set.Work a blog published by Pelorus Leadership Group, Inc.

Labor and skill shortages, concerns about the basic employability skills of new workers, changes in worker expectations, and changes in when, where and how work is accomplished, are all changing our workplaces.  It is no longer just the responsibility of the worker, education or government.  Employers must also work to be ready for the changes.

Through this blog you Pelorus Leadership Group will share, and encourage you to share ideas, tools, links and other materials to help employers ensure they are ready.
